Motorcycle Unit
Former Chief Rick Oliva established the Franklin Police Department Motorcycle Unit in July 2005. The Franklin Police Department currently operates two 2019 Harley-Davidson FLHTP Electra Glide motorcycles.
The primary responsibilities of the Motorcycle Unit members include traffic enforcement, accident investigation, and providing escorts for parades, dignitaries, and funerals. As a division of the Franklin Police Department's Traffic Enforcement and Crash Investigation Unit, the Motorcycle Unit focuses on addressing traffic-related issues throughout the city. Each officer assigned to this unit has undergone extensive training in motorcycle operation and is a highly skilled rider.
The Motorcycle Unit has proven to be an effective tool for enforcing traffic laws and vehicle equipment codes. Due to their maneuverability, motorcycles can navigate through traffic more quickly and access areas that standard patrol vehicles cannot, such as bike trails and parks. Additionally, the motorcycles serve as an excellent instrument for community relations and are often displayed at public events, including the annual National Night Out Celebration, Citizens Academy Demonstrations, and various escorts.
