K-9 Unit

The Franklin Police Department K-9 Unit was established in 1991. The unit is currently funded to have three K-9/handler teams, each serving different roles. Each canine and handler team completes rigorous training and certification to ensure accuracy, reliability, and legal compliance. The K-9 program emphasizes professionalism and accountability in every deployment.

Dual Purpose Patrol Canine

This dual-purpose patrol K9 is trained in various skills, including building and area searches, evidence recovery, tracking, officer protection, criminal apprehension, and narcotics detection. The dual-purpose dog team is actively involved in street patrols and assists with investigations. In addition to their regular patrol duties, this K9 participates in community demonstrations to enhance public understanding of their roles and to strengthen the relationship with the citizens they serve.

Police Therapy Canine

The Franklin Police Department’s Police Therapy Dog aims to provide comfort, emotional support, and foster positive interactions between law enforcement and the community. Our specially trained therapy dog, Clover, assists officers during high-stress situations, community events, and outreach programs. Clover helps reduce anxiety and build trust within the community.

Clover visits schools, senior centers, hospitals, and various community events, engaging with children, seniors, and residents. This program promotes safety, wellness, and positive relationships in the community.

Electronics-Detecting Canine

The Electronics-Detecting Canine is capable of detecting the chemical compounds found in electronic storage devices such as cell phones, tablets, computers, hard drives, SIM cards, and USB drives. This dog is trained to recognize the odor of specific materials used in the manufacturing of electronic components.

Our electronics-detecting canine, Cayman, assists investigators in locating concealed or discarded electronic devices during search warrants, criminal investigations, and correctional operations. Her use is particularly valuable in cases involving digital evidence such as child exploitation, financial crimes, narcotics trafficking, and intelligence investigations.
