Medical Studies Participation
County EMS and City Paramedics Participate in Medical Studies
The City of Franklin participates in a County-wide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agreement that ensures consistent, county-wide access to Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic services for an EMS response. As part of that County-wide services contract, all paramedic units within the County, including the Franklin Fire Department's, are required “to participate in research as determined by the County Research Committee.” These studies are highly regulated by various federal agencies. A citizen has raised a concern that a current two-part study warrants further public awareness. The two-part study relates to treatment aspects for cardiac arrest events: one part is an interventional drug study and the other part relates to CPR techniques. In response to the citizen concerns, this additional notification and study explanation is being provided (see links below). Study protocol requires that an individual “opt out” if they do not want to be automatically included in the study in the event of a cardiac arrest event where an ambulance responds. All residents are encouraged to read the informational materials provided by the studies (see links below). There are instructions and contact information in the last paragraph of each study document to assist you in getting your questions answered or in “opting-out.” The links are provided below.
