Fire Protection Permit

Fire protection permits are required for all fire protection work conducted in the City of Franklin. A Minor Modification Permit is required from the City of Franklin Fire Department for all minor modifications to existing fire alarm and sprinkler systems.  A minor modification is defined as an alteration to or addition of:

  • 20 or fewer sprinkler heads to an existing automatic fire sprinkler system; or
  • 20 or fewer devices to an existing fire alarm system

To apply for a Minor Modification Permit:

  • Complete the application form found below.  Permit will NOT be processed without a detailed description of the work to be done.
  • Once the application is received and processed, you will receive an email with an invoice for the application fee ($50).  You can pay the invoice via the link that you will be provided or you may mail/drop off a check payable to the City of Franklin Fire Department, referencing the job location and invoice number.  
  • The review process will begin and be completed within 10 business days once the invoice is paid.  The permit will be emailed to the applicant when the review is complete.
  • Permit will NOT be processed without a description of the work to be done.

Permit requests for fire protection systems to be installed or modified within the City of Franklin including but not limited to underground fire protection mains (including combination mains), fire sprinklers, fire alarms, clean agent and wet chemical systems, or those that do not meet the minor modification criteria above, MUST be submitted directly to Fire Safety Consultants, Inc. (FSCI).  Plan review fees must be paid directly to FSCI upon submittal.

The City of Franklin Fire Department is a Delegated Agent of the State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services to perform plan review and inspection of fire protection systems.  FSCI witnesses flushing and performs hydrostatic testing of Fire Protection and Domestic Water Combination Mains for the City of Franklin Fire Department.
