The City of Franklin, Wisconsin, Fire Department (FFD) is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic individual for the position of Assistant Fire Chief (Operations). This position holds considerable autonomy and decision-making authority. The Assistant Chief assists and advises the Fire Chief in operational matters and serves as the department’s representative to several external stakeholder agencies and professional organizations, including the Milwaukee County Fire Training Officers Association, the Milwaukee County Shared Services Committee, and the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management (OEM). The Assistant Chief will both advocate on behalf of the FFD in conducting business with these agencies and will also ensure that FFD personnel train and operate in compliance with the standards agreed upon by those bodies. The ideal applicant will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, will be highly organized, and have an exceptional working knowledge of modern firefighting strategy and tactics. The Assistant Chief, along with other command staff, assists in organizational goal-setting and strategic planning. The Assistant Chief may be expected to respond directly to an emergency scene and to function within the incident command structure. The Assistant Chief may act in the capacity of shift commander (Battalion Chief) in limited circumstances and may act in the role of the Fire Chief in his or her absence.
Qualifications Include: Applicants must have five (5) years of experience as a Chief Officer (Battalion Chief or higher) or ten (10) years of overall fire service experience may be considered. Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science or a closely related field such as Public Safety or Public Administration is required at time of application. Successful completion of Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic preferred) and State of Wisconsin Fire Officer I certification at time of application.
Salary & Benefits: 2026 salary range is $104,006 to $140,410, depending on qualifications. Benefits include WRS Pension, dual option health insurance and dental insurance, optional vision insurance, life insurance, paid time off (including sick leave, vacation time, paid holidays, and personal days), retiree health insurance, tuition reimbursement, and vehicle allowance.
