Franklin Police Motorcycle Unit

Former Chief Richard Oliva established the Franklin Police Department Motorcycle Unit in July of 2005. The Franklin Police Department currently operates two 2019 Harley Davidson FLHTP Electra Glide motorcycles.

The Motorcycle Unit members' primary duties are traffic enforcement, accident investigation, and escort duties for parades, dignitaries and funerals. The Motorcycle Unit, a division of the Franklin Police Department Traffic Enforcement & Crash Investigation Unit, concentrates its patrol efforts on traffic-related problems throughout the City.  Each officer assigned to the Unit has undergone extensive training in the operation of a police motorcycle, and is a highly-skilled rider.

The Motorcycle Unit has proven to be a highly-effective tool in the enforcement of traffic laws and vehicle equipment codes.  Due to its maneuverability, the motorcycle is able to get through traffic quicker, and into areas where a normal patrol squad cannot such as bike trails and parks.  The motorcycles also provide the Department with an excellent instrument for community relations and are often on display at public functions like the annual National Night Out Celebration, Citizens Academy Demonstrations, and numerous escorts.
