Fall Prevention Class

The Franklin Health Department invites residents 60 and older to participate in a 7-week course, "Stepping On". This evidence-based class helps seniors to reduce their risk for falls by increasing their strength and improving their sense of balance.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one in three people age 65 and older fall each year.  In 2010, Wisconsin State health officials reported that deaths from falls are now the most common cause of injury-related deaths in the state; seniors represented a large majority of fall-related deaths (87%) and inpatient hospitalizations (70%).  Hip fracture is the most serious and expensive injury resulting from falling.

Falls are not an inevitable part of aging. There are lifestyle changes that can be made to reduce the risk of falling.  Class topics will address reducing your risk of falling through the use of exercises, home safety, medication review with physician, the importance of regular vision exams, and mobility in the community.
