Inspection Services

Inspection Services approves and issues permits including building, electrical, plumbing, heating, occupancy, erosion control, etc., and performs all inspections related to those permits.  Inspection Services recently received approval from the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) to expand its commercial building and HVAC plan approval authority to include unlimited area alterations (effective May 1, 2023).  In addition, Inspection Services is responsible for issuing drive approach and culvert permits, inspection of reported code violations, and updating codes and ordinances.  Inspection Services also provides staff support to the Architectural Review Board.
 

NEW ONLINE PERMIT APPLICATION PROGRAM FOR LICENSED CONTRACTORS ONLY

Welcome to the City of Franklin Inspection Services Online Permit Application Program - a new initiative to strive for improved service to our customers.  Please read the below information before getting started to ensure accurate and timely processing of your permit application.

The Online Permit Application Program only includes permits for work specified in the chart below.  Please note that the chart also reflects what other permits are needed for the type of work you are planning.  If your project is not listed in the table, please see the "APPLYING FOR ALL OTHER PERMITS" section below.

Please read the instructions carefully when in the online permit application program.  Fill in all required information and include any required documentation.  We are not able to process incomplete requests.

Please note that in order to submit an online permit, first-time users will need to establish an account in the BS&A Online Portal below and obtain a unique City PIN from the Inspection Services Department (414-425-0084).

APPLYING FOR ALL OTHER PERMITS:

  • Applications can be submitted in-person at the Inspection Services counter during regular hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (we recommend that applications be dropped off by 4 p.m.) or by mailing it to:

PERMIT PICK-UP:

  • Once a permit is issued, Inspection Services will contact the applicant and let them know the permit is ready for pick-up.  Note:  Some permits will be processed while you wait. 

PAYMENT OPTIONS:

  • Applicant may PAY BY CHECK.
  • Mail a check.  Include address and permit number and note that check should be directed to Inspection Services.
  • Drop a check in the outdoor drop box at the main entrance to City Hall.  Envelope would need to indicate address and permit number and that it is for Inspection Services (applicant should call to let us know they are bringing in a payment).
  • Pay by credit card at the Treasury Office.
  • Online Payment Options (Service fees will apply based on transaction type and are non-refundable.)

INSPECTIONS:

  • Permit holders shall have all required inspections completed by Inspection Services staff before work may commence.
